A beautiful theater space with around probably 250-ish seats. The architecture of the space is evocative of a much older space. The performance was top notch and inventive. If you are a Shakespeare fan, seeing a play here is well worth your time.
Great intimate theater. Perfect place to watch Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. Just renovated and looks beautiful.
This was my first time here. What a gem of a place. So much history, beautiful architecture, really neat old library you can actually use if you have a reason to, helpful staff. You can even pre-order your drinks and food for intermission to avoid waiting in line. We saw Amadeus which was fantastic. We had great seats but there doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house as it is a very intimate theatre. Can't wait to return for another show.
We saw an amazing show. Antoinette Crowe-Legacy was a tear jerking Hermione and seeing Kate Norris’s master workmanship is always a treat!
The new ramp into the entrance is well designed and I think will really help those with mobility issues.
It’s great that bathrooms are gender neutral. However, it really stressed out the very old, disabled lady who didn’t understand and urgently needed the facilities. She seemed to panic that she didn’t know what to do. I think they need better, more culturally appropriate signage; toilet time is taboo and so needing to ask for help is hard. I also think the main bathroom doors are unnecessary. We don’t need privacy when washing our hands, only for the stalls.
The folger theatre is a charming venue in central DC, on Capitol Hill. It is the centerpiece of the Folger Shakespeare Library. It has largely Shakespeare inspired performances but there are other classics too. The theatre is reasonably old so the seats are smallish. It does not seem to be wheel-chair friendly which is probably a reflection of its age. There are two viewing levels; ground and balcony. The views are good from most seats but there are some that are obstructed by pillars. The theatre itself is intimate so even seated upstairs offers good viewing. You can buy drinks and small snacks at intermission in the basement level where the restrooms are and they do take credit cards. Avoid the queue by preordering. During the weekend there is some free on street parking. If not there is a garage a 10 minute walk away. There is no valet parking. I highly recommend this theatre.
Very strange that they didn't touch the theater during all the renovations. Desperately needs spruce up. Needs new seating, cleaning/refresh of all the woodwork and generally kind of a crowded mess onstage (what the hell were those green blocks?) . I get that it's a tavern style and not Blackfriars...but it doesn't have to feel dark, dusty, and just kind of messy.
Really loved the theater. It was nice to be in an environment that took you someplace before your performance did. Went to Not Another Day Off: Injustice is Here which was a great program to have on a day of celebration for Dr. Martin Lauther King, Jr. I look forward to returning for some other performances. The selection is actual really diverse
Saw the Winters Tale here the other weekend... get tickets now! It was great!
